In face of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA), which was signed into law a few months ago by the United States Senate and President, online casino sites were presumed doomed. Well, as the time goes by and the clouds scatter, the situation seems more complicated than that, if only for the fight that the online casino community is willing to put up. Naturally, the law is opposed by online casino companies and gamblers alike, who are not about to sit back and watch their favorite hobby or source of income vanish.
But the online casino companies and the gamblers are not alone in opposing the law. Objective observers are also fearful of the consequences of the law, which reminds them all too much of the Prohibition era of the 1920’s. Back then, the law banned alcohol sales and the entire industry simply went underground, getting alcohol to whomever wished it but adding an illegal and criminal aspect to the business. There is no good to come from running the online casino business in that direction.
Those who are less involved in the online casino business and truly have the people’s interest in mind, at least with regard to gambling addiction, are concerned that the law does not address this problem at the least. Running the online casino operations underground will keep the addiction problem where it is at the moment, away from the light and uncared for by the authorities who could actually do something about it. Heavy gamblers and problem gamblers will find a way around the law.
